Dreamcatcher

Direction: Lawrence Kasdan
Cast: Morgan Freeman, Jason Lee
Rating: ***
Three heavyweight talents get together to spin a tall tale. The story is adapted from a bulky 600-page novel by Stephen King (Carrie, The Shawshank Redemption, The Shining). The screenplay''s co-written by the Oscar-winning William Goldman (Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, The Ghost and the Darkness). And the director is Lawrence Kasdan, identified with such superior quality films as Body Heat, The Big Chill and Silverado. So much for name- and-title dropping. Unfortunately, neither of the three stalwarts is likely to remember Dreamcatcher as one of the best efforts.

On the contrary, the film''s far too convoluted and incoherent in its bid to mix various genres and moods into one plot-pourri. Is this a sci-fi yearn, a weird comedy or a drama replete with stressed-out men breaking into monologues? Go figure. Teeming with kinky characters galore, the outcome largely hinges on four men who, 20 years ago, had rescued a mentally retarded kid from a humiliating attack. In return, the quartet has been bestowed with telepathic powers which turn out to be a blessing as well as a curse.

The foursome (Thomas Jane, Damian Lewis, Timothy Olyphant and Jason Lee) reunites at a habitual annual meeting. Hell breaks loose. Their rendezvous cabin is snowed under by a blizzard. Meanwhile, a super-secret task force, led by the mentally unstable Colonel (Freeman) arrives to exterminate some deadly aliens called the `shit weasels'' who have the capacity to grow inside people and explode from their posterior!

Stinky? Or funny? The viewer can read the film either way. Despite the film''s slick technical values, the expected display of competent special effects, and yet another faultless performance by Freeman, this dream flick often verges close to a nightmare.

It''s stranger than fiction, all right. Recommended viewing, yes, but only for those with a taste for an encounter of the bizarre kind.

CLICK HERE to write your own review
